Advanced Academic Enrichment

Robbinsville Schools are committed to meeting the needs of all learners. In order to address the needs of our students who require advanced academic enrichment, we have developed a program that integrates differentiated strategies and expanded enrichment opportunities within the classroom, as well as pull-out exploratory experiences.

Advanced learners are those students who demonstrate a high level of aptitude in relation to their chronological peers. If they are to achieve in accordance with their capabilities, they require modifications to their educational program. This represents about 3-4% of students in grades 1-5.

All students in grades K-4 are given screening assessments in the spring. These may include: SAGES (Screening Assessment for Gifted Elementary Students), TOMAGS (Test of Mathematical Abilities for Gifted Students), math and reading MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) tests, End-of-Year math test, DRAs (Developmental Reading Assessments), and open-ended writing and math responses. Students in grades 5-7 are also given screening assessments in the spring. These may include: math and reading MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) tests, End-of-the-Year math test, Running Records reading assessments, and open-ended writing and math responses. As each child develops at different rates, all students will be reevaluated for eligibility each year. Please see below for more information about our enrichment program.

Grades 1-5:

Students in grades 1-5 who qualify for ELA enrichment, regularly meet to focus on various common core state standards. Students read and discuss literature to comprehend it on an in-depth level. Students apply cause and effect, compare and contrast, conclusions and inferences, and sequence of events to the discussions and their writing. Students in grades 3 and 4 also work on advanced vocabulary development by learning new words and incorporating them into different types of analogies.

Students in grades 1-4 who qualify for math enrichment, regularly work together to develop a deeper understanding of various mathematical concepts. Attribute blocks, Tangrams, pattern blocks, fraction circles, puzzles, games, Pentominoes, and word problems are used to create challenging lessons that promote learning.

Grades 6-8:

In grades 6-8, students can self-select to participate in enrichment.  The enrichment program offers both independent and guided activities in addition to the daily grade-level workload.  Any student is eligible to participate, and communication about offered “tracks” is sent home each fall.  To find out more about this program, please click here

Please note, due to scheduling and staffing needs due to COVID-19, we will be offering a “transitional” self-select model until we can proceed with our full program, anticipated Winter 2020.  Please check your email for information from the district about how to opt-in to the transitional model, or contact Sarah Foster, Supervisor of Secondary Curriculum and Professional Development, with questions at foster.sarah@robbinsville.k12.nj.us

Grades 9-12:

Students at Robbinsville High School will have many opportunities to demonstrate their advanced academic standing through Honors and Advanced Proficiency classes. These classes are offered through a variety of subjects and can be taken throughout their time at RHS. Students also have the opportunity to participate in Dual Enrollment and the JumpStart Program with Mercer County Community College.
